Ecommerce SEO Break-Even Calculator

Estimate how many additional orders need to cover an SEO project. Use the same currency for every input. This is a planning calculation, not a traffic or revenue forecast.

Additional whole orders to cover the cost

9 orders

Contribution per order: 40.00 in your chosen currency.

At a 2% purchase rate, about 450 additional qualified sessions would produce 9 orders on average.

Actual results vary. The sessions estimate assumes the conversion rate and order economics stay constant. These orders must be incremental to cover the SEO investment.

Transparent formula

How the calculator works

For example, a 349 project with a 100 order value and 40% contribution margin needs 9 additional whole orders. At a 2% conversion rate, that corresponds to about 450 additional sessions on average. The tool does not predict that SEO will generate them.

  1. Contribution per orderaverage order value x contribution margin
  2. Break-even orderstotal SEO cost / contribution per order, rounded up
  3. Indicative sessionsbreak-even orders / purchase conversion rate, rounded up
Use reliable inputs

What to include

Include agency fees and additional implementation time in the cost for the period you are evaluating. Contribution margin should account for product costs and relevant variable expenses such as fulfilment, payment fees and expected returns. Use your finance records where available.

Use an organic purchase rate for the relevant landing-page group. A blog’s session mix can differ substantially from product and category traffic. If you only have a store-wide average, treat the result as an initial scenario and test a more conservative rate.

Decision check

Use it before approving a project

Compare the order requirement with real demand, inventory and implementation capacity. A plausible break-even number does not establish that a proposed fix can produce the required growth. Read our ecommerce SEO ROI guide for attribution and baseline limits.

Google’s Search Console and Analytics guidance explains why search clicks and analytics sessions differ. Use analytics purchase sessions for this conversion-rate input; do not mix Google clicks and on-site session rates without reconciling them.
